THE PROGRAM
LIFE IN THESE ISLANDS is a one-hour television special and future series that will celebrate Hawaii’s unique cultural heritage as well as provide practical ways in which we can move into a more positive and sustainable future.
Life in these Islands will do this through music, story telling and aloha — those qualities from different parts of our community that make Hawaii a special place for kama’aina and malihini alike. It’s about capturing and sharing the “essence” of all that we are and doing it in a way that inspires us to be better.
CATALYST FOR CHANGE
The underlying theme of Life in these Islands is that things are changing here in Hawai’i and that if we want it to change for the better it will take a significant effort by people of all walks of life to do it. This will take education, persistence, and leadership. Life in these Islands is meant to be a catalyst to help bring about this positive change. The program and its guests will call forth the people to rise to the challenge and to take their place in this unique time in history.
This will be accomplished by:
• STORYTELLING - SHARING FOUNDATIONAL VALUES: By defining and providing examples of these values in an effective way, people will begin to understand that our future depends on living out and perpetuating these foundational ways of life.
• LEADERSHIP: We will feature kupuna, cultural experts, entertainers, community leaders and everyday people who have been given a voice to lead in a way that is pono. To lead by example.
• CALL TO ACTION: Our focus will be about personal responsibility and what’s being done to sustain and improve our way of life. The goal is to provide information and opportunities for people to participate in this journey to a more profitable and sustainable Hawaii.
The TV Program & Vision
The primary goal of the program is to utilize technology to inspire and unify our community. The traditional setting for family gatherings in Hawaii has always been the backyard. Food, music, dance and story telling are hallmarks of our island lives. The Life in These Islands program will be produced in this backyard setting and will feature music by well-known island entertainers. Brief vignettes featuring our kupuna, entertainers, island celebrities and other stories of interest will be interspersed between musical numbers.
By showcasing inspiring people, values, and stories in this traditional setting we’ll reach a bigger audience with vital information and a message that will help to shape a more positive and sustainable future. Our goal is to be a link to everything we cherish while at the same time be a catalyst for positive change.
Mentor & educate our youth
Another goal is to provide mentoring and opportunities for young people in media production. A mentoring program is being developed that will work with public, private, and charter schools to provide education, on the job training, and media exposure to our local youth. These young people will be our future correspondents if we go to series.
Reaching Community
Life in these Islands is a tool to educate and inspire our community. This will be accomplished by putting the program on local broadcast television and cable, posting it on the Internet and by distributing the DVD series to schools, through partnering businesses, and by sales to families and individuals.
